Leader of the Pack

Me in Luke's scout shirt.  Please don't tell him.

I am currently the assistant den mother for the Wolf pack in our ward.  Don't be jealous.  To be honest, it has not been my favorite calling.  8 year old boys have a lot of energy and a warped sense of humor.  My son is no exception.  And we get them right after school, every Wednesday, for an hour.

I have struggled to get my heart into scouting in general.  It is all so corny--the cheers at pack meeting, the requirements, the horrible outfits.  I get the heeby-jeebies just walking into the scouting store.   I spent about four hours at Cub Country this last summer and it was the longest day of my life.  There were women leaders up there wearing the scout shirt.  Did you know those babies cost like 80 bucks?

Do you think they could come up with a more unflattering look for ladies?

The best thing that ever happened to me with scouting was finding this stuff called Badge Magic.  It is for us moms who are lazy who don't sew.  You stick the badges on the uniform and they never come off.  Now that is an idea I can get behind!

We had the Pinewood derby on Tuesday night.  As a single mother who never had anything to do with the derby in the past, I had no idea what this was all about.  On Sunday night, Luke pulled his car out of the box.  It was a block of wood.  THEY EXPECT US TO CUT THE BLOCK OF WOOD INTO A FREAKING CAR!  Luke said "Don't worry mom..I can use my pocket knife!"  Umm, no.  Luckily, my awesome home teachers were over visiting (the ones who gave me the makeover) and Steve said he had a car Luke could borrow.  Saved again.

Horrible lighting on this picture

In the Mormon culture, it is kind of a big deal for boys to get their Eagle (an advanced scout rank.)  It involves lots of camp outs, merit badges and a huge project at the end.  I have three boys.  I started doing the math on how many more years I might have to be a den mother or be involved in the scouting program.  Somewhere around 15 years!

Then the other night as I was googling where to put Luke's badges on his uniform, it hit me what I have to do.  I came across this awesome photo of Destiny's Child.  Guess what I am wearing to next month's pack meeting:

Do you think this would get me fired from scouts forever?

Ha ha, it's worth a shot! I hate, I mean, have a hard time with scouts, too. I will do anything to get out of pack mtg. Anything. Your blog is hilarious. Thanks for the laughs.

Yes! Now that is my way of getting out of a calling! Maybe I'll have my boys join the troop from school since the leaders actually volunteer.

I also have 3 boys and I LOVED badge magic with my first. However, if you try to reuse your scout shirt you will be very sorry you used badge magic. It'll leave a nasty sticky residue that'll sit there until your 2nd boy moves up the ranks.

I discovered this awesome thing a little too late, but you are welcome. It's awesome. I can't link to it but google "plastic diamond patch holder". I bought mine for $1.00 at the scout supply store and I live in Ohio so I guarantee they have it in Utah.

Haha! I'm dreading the day when my boys begin the madness, although as long as I'm not a den leader and don't have to do anything to actually help them I'll be fine ;)

I hear what you're saying about Cub Scouts. When my kids started going, I looked at the calling to the Pack Master/Cub Committee Chairperson and thought that those had to be the worst callings ever!

The corny cheers (including the "Watermelon Cheer"--which may be the worst cheer ever!) and forced enthusiasm seemed almost too much. Then couple that with having to wrangle 20 or 30 eight to ten year olds running wild at the pack meetings--it seems like it'd easier herding cats. I couldn't imagine why anyone would ever volunteer?

But eventually I realized that the corny stuff that I hated so much wasn't really for me, the other leaders, or the parents even. It was for the boys and they loved it. Somehow that made it much easier to bear.

I bet your cubs love having you for their "Akela" and you are making an impact on them that they will still remember when they have kids in Cub Scouts. Keep up the good work!

It's posts like this that make me so glad I have all girls! Bahahahaha! Good luck! If anyone could pull off the bare midriff scout shirt, it's you Brooke!

I'm impressed at all the things you do. You are amazing!

Are you kidding? The Beyonce shirt would keep you in forever. The cub pack committee chairman would be all over that action. It would be the most exciting thing to happen to cub scouts in a long time!
About the eagle--you gotta get a great scout leader that will push the kids along. I didn't do much for Cam & Rex's, thankfully.
I do relate to the badge magic. I remember trying to just iron on the badges, assuming that they were CERTAINLY iron-on. I couldn't believe they had to be sewn on, and that was in the 80's!!

P.s. I'm voting for the comeback of your bangs. Just sayin'. . .

This post reminds me of Troop Beverly Hills. If you've never seen it, you must! It stars Shelly Long and is full of 80's awesomeness. And as the troop leader, she goes to a designer to have her uniform redone. Classic!

I've never been any sort of scout leader, but I'm pretty sure I'm getting one of those shirts to wear to my son's next Court of Honor. Currently planning my grand entrance now...

When he came down to pick up Sammie from dance, he was so proud of his wins. He's adorable!

You look so amazeballs in that first pic!
I have no first hand experience with scouts ... but you have my sympathies.

If I looked as cute as you in that uniform I might campaign for that calling...

My husband was called to be Bishop a year ago and I had to be released and a new calling found for me. One night he came home and said, "here are some openings-nursery, primary chorister, or cub scouts. Do any of those sound good to you?" and I said, "NO--and you are just going to have to go ask the Lord because I am not picking my poison!" I got activity days--worked out great! And a bonus--no uniform!

I have so many untoward feelings about the Scouting program.

But you look really good in Luke's shirt!
