Sun Valley 2009

We took a road trip to Sun Valley, ID about 3 weeks ago. When we returned, I wrote 10 Rules for a Successful Road Trip with kids. You can find them here.

Sun Valley has a special place in my heart. Sam and I figured that we have been there 9 times in the last 11 years. We usually go each July for the Utah Bar Conference. What I love about Sun Valley is that we always do the same things, eat at the same places, and see the same people.

The first evening there is always a BBQ/opening social put on by the Bar.

Sammie and her little friend Halle stole rolls from the BBQ to feed the ducks. It isn't obvious is it?

Here are the kids feeding the ducks:

I had my first "celebrity" moment when this cute girl named Jenn came up and told me she reads my blog. I've done this to other people so this made my day.

The highlight of the first evening for my kids is the ice-skating. Sam literally drags them around the rink until his back is ready to give out. I get to sit on the side and laugh at him.

As the week goes on, we do a lot of bike riding:

We even take one long ride to Hailey, ID where the little ones ride in the trailer. They look pretty squished but they both fell asleep within minutes.

Luke was a trooper and rode on a "tag-a-long" bike on the back of mine. The picture of the two of us on that bike is too heinous for me to post so you get this one of us looking at the scenery.

We also did a lot of swimming (notice the matching trunks--what can I say, I have a problem):

Luke loved showing off his skills from swimming lessons:

Here he is with his little girlfriend Halle. I love this picture:

My kids always get out and warm themselves on the cement. Do you remember doing that?

Once again, I love this trip because while Sam is doing this:

I'm doing this with my friend Brandi:

This group of young men were in the pool right in front of us. They kept yelling to Ryan "Hey Gordo!"

Here is my little "Gordo" (translation: fatty) in his swimsuit. Rude huh?

They may have been referring to me. I'm praying they were talking about Ryan.

You are not gordo. You look good, and you must have gotten a spray tan before you left? Your skirt at the BYU meet n greet reminds me of the Nester's bedskirt. That's a compliment--I really like her bedskirt. I totally remember laying out on the cement (and also spending lots of time warming up in those showers in the women's locker room at the spa, I digress) now I shudder at how that would rip up a swimsuit. Nice post. You've made me consider posting about my 4th of July after all this time.

Brooke you look fantastic! You make me want to get thin. Just so you know, Scott was a huge baby, like Ryan...and as you know, he is absolutely the perfect speciman of a male human now. ....So enjoy Gordo...it gives him room to grow without stretch marks. (that's why I am fat too, I am going to grow. LOL)

I've only been there once, but I loved it. Remind me to tell you about the Dennis Miller run-in up there. Bill totally was a nerd,

They are totally talking about your kid. You don't qualify as Gordo (was Jesssica Simpson around?? Haha!! Same has the hots for a porky lady!!)

You wear skinny jeans, remember??

Warm cement reminds me of heavenly summer days spent at the local pool..when we wore suntan oil, not sunblock. Ah, the good ol' days.

That place looks wonderful!

How fun to have a "celebrity" moment, is it me or is that a strange place to have one?

I love the matching swim trunks, your problem is a fashionable one!

Your mention of warming up on the cement brought back vivid memories of you and Rex at the pool when you were kids. You two would step out of the pool shivering and Linda would wrap you in a towel and down you would go - almost spread eagle on the cement. Always preceded by $1.99 meals from DerWienerschnitzel (I have no idea how to spell that....) Those were fun times. You and Kelly spent hours in that pool. Great memories.

Brooke - I wasn't kidding when I said I wanted a full-on-frontal of your swim suit so I'd know what I'm stealing when I come to Utah. You look great and your entourage is adorable. My dad told me that Sam called him mid-trip to say Luke had made it to the finals so you were staying until Sunday. Glad to know my brother's stand-up routine is alive and well. See you soon.

Heidi--there is a reason I don't post full frontal photos of myself in a bathing suit. Always, always sitting with the photographer slightly above. I know all the tricks.

We're looking forward to seeing you this weekend. If you thought Sam's stand-up routine was bad on the phone--you should have heard him giving his talk in Sacrament meeting last week--I called his his monologue a la Jay Leno.

I know exactly what you mean about the ice skating. When Micah takes Sam (we haven't been w/Ella yet), he literally holds him under his pits and drags him around the rink. His back and ankles are absolutely killing him and I'm laughing hysterically on the sidelines.

How fun! Looks like you had a great time...I am jealous. :)

All I can say is that I have the cutest grandkids and little Ryan is NOT gordo - and you aren't either!!!

Fun trip! I love sunvalley. It is soo pretty there. Just hooked up with Marcie Jones at our 20th reunion. We talked about you and how funny your blog is and how i'm a huge fan. Btw, i wore skinny jeans to my reunion and i'm older than you. I wonder if everyone thought i was too old?!

Loving the post on the trip. Looks like a dream. You and your kids look so great! We have various forms of "fatty" that we usually call Sam too. My favorite is "Chunky Monkey". I just hope the thigh rolls aren't permanent. How long are they cute? I am also still wondering the identity of the math teacher from the previous post.
