Mystery

I have started finding the same odd holes in the front of all of my shirts. Aargh!

Here is a close-up:

And this is an example of when it gets really bad:

I can't figure out where they are coming from. Anyone else have this problem?

I have the same problem, but I have no idea where they come from!! I hate it! Sometimes it happens after just one wash of a brand new shirt! Ugh!

I'm coming out of lurking to comment on this of all things.

My cousin and I lament over this all the time. I'm pretty sure the culprit for me is counter tops! Leaning against them while putting on makeup, doing dishes etc. That seems to be the exact spot where my holes are. I think the fabric is just weak and the corners of my counters wear them right out.

Me tooooo! No idea why. I thought maybe it had something to do with loading my washing machine too full, but then why would all the holes be in the front, bottom area of my shirts? The countertop theory makes sense ...

Is it where your seat belt goes across your lap? All my pants/jeans pockets have this prob and it's from my car seat.

Me too- can't figure it out. Maybe from a belt?

I totally have this problem and have figured out that the holes always start where the button of my pants is. I think the fabric rubs right there because the jean material sticks out at the top....hate it.

I have this problem and I have always thought it's because I'm always pulling on my shirt to keep it from clinging to my stomach...but I wouldn't think you skinny girls would be doing that so maybe that's not where the holes come from hmmm.

I agree with Natalie. I think it is the darn button on my pants! I just got a new shirt and it just happened to that one. I hate it!

Hi Brooke...yep, I have the problem too. I think it's from belts. I have been trying not to wear a belt as much and it seems to be helping. i think that the belt, along with leaning on/over things and having things rub there when a belt is on makes the problem even worse. I say a belt is the culprit.

I have this problem too, and I don't wear belts. I think it is from the jean/pants material that sticks out just slightly after it is buttoned. Glad I am not the only one!

Pretty sure it's moths Brooke

I have this on every damn t-shirt I own. I think its counter tops.

In addition to moths, it could also be carpet beetles. Go ahead and google "holes in clothes moths carpet beetles".

I have the same issue...and haven't figured out if it's the countertops, the pants, carpet beetles, belts, or cloth-eating gremlins. The holes are always in the same spot, and only on knit shirts. When you figure out what the culprit is, let the rest of us victims know, okay?

I agree with Elizabeth, I think it is from seat belts. I bought some new tanks to wear during treatment and because of my surgery and my radiation I couldn't wear a seat belt and the shirts were fine. Started wearing seat belts again and I have the little holes.

Let me ask you this...Does it happen to your Gap shirts? I have found that my Gap t-shirts don't have the little holes.

Hate Hate Hate the little holes!!

I've heard it is from front loader washers that are overfull. I don't know why the holes only appear towards the bottom of the shirt though?

Counter tops. every time I lean over to look in the mirror to put on mascara then, slide over to the sink to brush my teeth...holes. Same thing in the kitchen.

I think I am in the counter top camp. It totally makes sense. Thanks everyone!

Thanks for answering the question that's been daunting me. I do believe you have it with the countertop theory. I also wonder why I tend to wear dark colored shirts when I clean my sinks with softscrub and why I haven't gotten the clue to wear an inside out apron of something to protect my clothes from bleach spots! Ugh!

Brooke! I read this the first time and was sympathetic but had absolutely no experience. THEN!!! Yesterday I bought a new shirt, wore it today for the very first time and ALREADY HAVE HOLES IN THAT VERY SPOT!!!!

You're right. It's the countertops...I know because my shirt is resting against it as I type this. I blame poor American posture. (I actually thought it might be from my baby's chubby leg rubbing against it as well, but no, more likely the countertop.)

Wow. So timely.

I have no idea what any of you are talking about! This epidemic is new to me. I do not lean on counters though, so perhaps that IS your problem. This actually made me a little perplexed that so many of you have the same problem. I thought for sure someone would pipe up and say that doesn't happen to anyone else, which is why I read all these comments despite being fall-over exhausted. I am still marvelling at all the hole-in-the-shirt confessions...you all should really start a club or something. Love you Brooke.

I have one more theory so I will throw it out there...I think it may be holding kids. When I hold my baby or kids and they rub my shirt against the button. I also have stopped wearing a belt and always wash my shirts in a garment bag....

The new question is: what to do with all of these hokey shirts? And I have a ton from GAP. They do it as well. I'm jumping on the counter top/seat belt/Jean button wagon. How to prevent???

Let me know if you learn how to prevent!
