7-11 I Salute You

Today Sam and I pulled up to my friend Joy's house to drop something off to her husband. She mentioned that she was craving a chocolate on chocolate donut from 7-11. Just hearing the words made my mouth water. I directed Sam to drive straight to the Sev and buy me and Joy some donuts.

The crowd is always a little sketchy at the Sev especially on Sundays but you cannot beat their donuts. I don't know where they're getting 'em but they are doing something right. I also purchased a super big gulp of diet coke. The combination was divine.

On the way back to Joy's, Sam and I had a conversation about fountain diet coke versus the can. I will only drink diet coke from a fountain. I'm too good for the can. Sam claims it makes no sense because only the can contains the precious nectar in its pristine state--no one mixing the CO-2 and syrup. I say fountain is better. What say all of you?

I would never buy vanilla coke--only diet coke for me.

My sister Ashley is looking into buying a mini-fountain for her home. She loves diet coke even more than I do. Take a look.

Absolutely fountain!!!!! Second choice is bottled (not 2 liter) and way down the line is from a can. Canned drinks taste "tinny".
However, there is an exception....an ice cold soda from a cooler at the beach is divine.

Note that according to most Southeners nothing, absolutely nothing, beats a cold Coca-Cola in those original small coke bottles. I must agree.

Those donuts are the best ever. My sev doesn't have them. I eat them two at a time at Mom's. I have a sev within walking distance--fabulous (though perhaps it gives you a better understanding of the quality of my neighborhood).

Of course I prefer the fountain, but I would never turn my nose up at a cold can. I just got a 24 pack the other day and as Tyler pulled out the last 4 cans today he asked "didn't you JUST buy this?" Hence I am looking into the home fountain. It has to be industrial strength and well-maintained though.

P.S. I don't do Vanilla Coke or even fresh limes or lemons, but I do like an occasional blast of cherry coke mixed into my DC. I usually prefer it black, but the cherry coke is good on rare occasion, or if, heaven forbid, the DC is not working and you have to get Diet Pepsi.

Not even worth drinking from a can! It is fountain or nothing around here! I think I am kindof a diet coke snob!

I agree with Pandy, only in the south, it's pronounced, "cokcola." You DO NOT want to know the stats on those donuts. They are from Dunford bakery (in SLC) and I was appalled to see the fat and calorie count in just one! It was like a whole week's worth. I was devastated because your dad & I had this routine going. . .we would bike to the sev several miles away, each get a donut and DC and bike back. (forget water bottles and energy bars) When I saw the stats, I realized we would be better off sitting at home, not getting off the sofa, and not eating the donut.
Having said that, you are thin enough these days, you can do it!

Mom--I don't want to know about the donuts--ignorance is bliss.

Pandy--I was just telling Sam that the plastic bottle comes in second after the fountain and the can as a last resort. I have cans of diet coke for food storage.

The weird thing is I love diet A&W rootbeer from the can. But I do use a straw. Is that weird?

You ladies are ca-razy! But that's okay, I am too.

Um, that post made me run out to my freezer and thaw out one of my specialty wheat-free cinnamon sugar donuts. I pretend I don't have any, because Lance always tries to horke them, and he can eat the 7-11 ones along with the rest of you people.

Fountain first, bottle next, can as last resort.

So First and foremost Diet soda (or as you crazy people call it "pop") is awful in any shape or form. If we are talking about pure divinity here, a Dr Pepper from the fountain is what dreams are made of. If we want get real technical, Dr Pepper from Taco Bell is scientifically proven to be nectar of the gods.

Soda cans make my heart sad...

As a second thought, ANY time i walk into a 7-11 and see Pina Colada eyeing me from the slurpee machine, i must surpass all forms of fountain beverages to adhere to the greatness of that which is Pina Colada slurpee!!!

lindsey said...

Fountain first, then ICE COLD cans. Bottles last, which is unfortunate because that's the more affordable option here.

I swear they are Dunford Doughnuts, and you can buy those by the dozen at the Costco real close to your house! My sister and I buy a pack every time she came to visit!

Mom just ruined my day.

While I enjoy both fountain and can, when you get down to brass tacks, there is no substitute for a can.

The Diet Coke inside of a can is 100% accurate to its recipe. It is not subject to the follies and carelessness of a minimum-wage earning part-time employee.

By way of analogy, I liken the fountain Diet Coke to the infamous "potato pearls." Sure they make for a decent mashed potatoes side dish, but you can tell there is something not quite right. If you want to enjoy mashed potatoes, you have to make them from "real" potatoes (i.e., Diet Coke in a can).

As for the caloric content of a doughnut, c'est la vie! I will continue to enjoy them.

Ashley said...

How does Sam explain getting a bad or exquisite batch of canned coke? I agree the can is more consistent than the fountain--much more--but to say it is 100% accurate to its recipe is extreme. That said, I will take a bad coke over no coke any day. That includes European coke--coca cola light. The entire recipe is bad, but I drink it nonetheless.

I personally prefer my diet coke (with lime) from a can. Room temperature. Fountain diet coke is my last resort. I know, I am weird.

Sam said...

Ashley:

The bad can is usually the result of a minimum-wage earning part-time employee who did not follow proper procedure in transporting and/or storing the can.

I can (no pun intended) count on one hand the number of bad Diet Coke cans that I have had in the last ten years. By contrast, I would say that 20% of my fountain Diet Cokes taste a little off...and they are sometimes downright nasty, usually at a Maverick.

All hail the can!

Kelly said...

First of all there is absolutely NO comparison. I only drink soda from a can when there is no time to get a fountain soda. Vanilla Coak is just foul!! I do prefer Diet Pespi but I have to agree with Jon on the Taco Bell Dr.Pepper and Pina Colada slurpees. Of course all of this MIGHT be why I have kidney stones.

Sam said...

Kelly:

Your kidney stones are the result of drinking massive amounts of Diet Pepsi and/or related to Aunt Jacqui-induced stress.

You touched on one of the benefits of a can. It is only 12 fluid ounces. I can nurse on a can for over an hour and know I am only taking in a small amount. If you go with a 64 oz bladder buster with a garden hose for a straw, you can down it in 20 minutes, which can lead to unintended health problems.

Cans allow for moderation. Turn your back on the fountain (and the Diet Pepsi).

Pandy said...

Will someone please explain the difference between Diet Coke and Coke Zero???

Amy said...

Okay, serously family-you all have Diet Coke issues! I wouldn't touch Diet Coke with a ten foot pole. It's maybe the foulest thing produced! That said, soda from a can is horrible! If that's your only option, at least pour it over ice in a cup!

Onto 7-11. Is there anything healthy at "the sev"?? NO, however may I recommend the nachos. 7-11 has the best nachos ever-I craved them when I was pregnant. And that explains my thighs-amen

Aluminum cans cause Alzheimers...that's why I prefer fountain. And yes..sometimes the mix isn't right. Like Chevron diet cokes. They are battery acid. Wendy's and the Crest convenience store across from condo row at BYU have the best. I do have cans of real coke in my food storage. I figure the cans will give me Alzheimer's and I will forget that my supply is dwindling.

Pandy,

Diet coke is sweet nectar from the Gods. Coke zero is supposed to be a diet equivalent of what regular Coke tastes like.

As many of us already know diet coke has it's own flavor and is not meant to taste exactly like Coke. Coke zero does and it's disgusting.

And just because I know you are a DP drinker, I'll let you know I actually enjoy a diet pepsi now and then. I'm one of the few people who can go back and forth between diet coke and diet pepsi. Pandy, you are an original--you used to drink Tab back in the day--that is classic.

I recently discovered the bakery (Dunford) that makes those very donuts. I'm hooked. We've gone the last two weeks in a row. You must go get some fresh chocolate donuts. Dreamy.
Fountain is better, hands down. So fun that your sister looked into getting a fountain.

Reximus said...

Cold Diet Pepsi--out of the can-- in the morning. Nothing better. If I don't get one by 11:00 I start getting headaches. Is that bad? That being said, I gots to have a cold DC out of the tap when I hit In'N'Out or any type of Mexicano food. Is it possible that our family's gall bladder issues are related to this fetish? Naaaaah!

Kelly said...

Sam,

You do have a great point. Of course if I had anything, garden hose or not, that would "blast out" my kindney stone, I would be all over it. Who ever said it took 20 mins...rookies. I don't do anything in moderation and if I did, it would not be Diet Pepsi.

p.s. If you ever use Aunt Jacqui's name in the same paragrah as mine again...we might have to fight. She would give anyones kidney stones.

sarahw said...

I'm not a huge soda drinker, I prefer water 90% of the time. But when the time is right...diet coke from the fountain is superb (no cans please).

Jonathan, I will have to say that the pina-colada slurpee rates supreme. Once a year (when the time is right), I drive to the sev, fill up a slurpee, and enjoy.

Speaking of calories...Give me a chocolate on chocolate donut. I haven't had one of those in a years.

Sam - we actually had to return (to the store) about 6 12-packs (CANS) that all had the same code and exp. date that were all totally BAD. They were all flat - nasty. So sometimes even "good cans go bad." And I might add that I am a DC purist - if I sit down at a restaurant and they only have Diet Pepsi I get water - or 5 limes to cover up the taste of the SWILL!

Terra said...

I switched to Diet Pepsi about 5 years ago because I had to have a can so I could have it at home...Diet Coke in the can does not have enough carbination that is why it is so much better from the fountain (JMHO) - I told your sister if my husband could have a kegerater in the basement complete with CO2, built in tap on the bar top she sure could have that DC fountain pop at her house!!!!

Pandy said...

Blasphemy, Linda...regarding Diet Pepsi. I respect your preferences, but you'd really drink water with Mexican food if there was no DC? I prefer DP, but would never turn down a cold, fountain DC.

As much as I love DP, a close second is Welch's Grape soda. I keep it in the fridge and have 1/2glass every night before bed. I get giddy just anticipating the ritual.

You know, you can only find those chocolate doughnuts in a few locations. Of course, utah has the most. It is Ben's highlight of every business or famiy trip to Ut. to stop by the Sev at the mouth of Big Cottonwood and purchase he staples: doughnut, coke from the fountain, and chips. Personaly, my favorite is happy hour at Sonic with a little cherry of other flavor mixed in. (Plus, the kids stayed buckled in the whole time!) It is the closest thing I'll ever get to drinking the real stuff. But a little caffeine, takes off the edge.

Marni Bown said...

For me I don't really drink soda but I am all about the ice. If it is Sonic ice I love some soda in it for some reason.

Brooke,
I love reading your blog. Can we please be best friends because as I am reading your posts, I really think it is me writing. We have more than enough in common. Is it bad that I can't wait for Mondays because it means the big Bach and I can be lazy on the couch? My computer had issues for over a month and I am so happy to catch up on the outside world. Man, I missed bloggin. Have a GREAT day!

Christie said...

As a diet coke expert, I must say:

1. Best DC is McDonald's.
2. Second best is Sonic, but only because of the shaved ice.

If we could combine McD's DC and Sonic's ice...ahhhh. The world would be a perfect place.

Thanks. Now I want a donut.

Linda said...

P Herman - Yes, I admit - I would take the DP. That's where the 5 limes come in.
BTW - I'm happy that you are enjoying fruit- even in the form of juice! (hope you got my card - love ya!)

Kimmie said...

You all are crazy...as I said on my blog yesterday...soda makes me sick! I cannot drink the stuff in any form, so I guess I don;t have to worry about the can vs. fountain issue! As for the 7-11... I used to LOVE their chili cheese dogs as a kid. Im not sure I would dare eat it now???

sheryl said...

oh those evil donuts! When I was in labor with Dan they told me to go walk...I did right to a chocolate donut. I didn't know you weren't suppose to eat while in labor.
When I was expecting Scottie Stan would bring me one home every night. (I only gained 18 pounds so I should have eaten 2). That is the only thing I ever craved while pg. I don't know who has them in St. George. Best I don't know.

i am going to have to agree with you. thee is nothing better than a fountain diet coke. and you have to add a lemon!

This has been my most popular post yet--too funny. Diet coke from the fountain wins by a landslide.
