I've Joined the Dark Side

Note to self: Next time you decide to put on 15 pounds in two months (pregnant or not), don't also decide it is the perfect time to experiment with your hair.

Let me back up. Sam has been begging me since we got married to dye my hair back to its original color--red. He wanted all the blond out.

I finally decided to throw him a bone and just do it--how bad could it be? Apparently, really bad. It is sooooo dark, way darker than the red I used to be. All of a sudden, my skin looks so weird. I have to wear way more make-up and darken my eyebrows even more. I can't wear pink or pastels and it's kind of ruining my life. I know I'm being dramatic but it totally sucks. Wanna know the worst part? Sam doesn't even like it. Except that he thinks it's kind of cool that there is a strange woman in his bed.

The truth is, I try not to look in the mirror during the day and just forget that my hair is terrible. Have you all been there? The worst part is I paid good money to look like this. I keep telling myself I will start highlighting again in 6 weeks but I have to just deal with it until then. But even still, it's going to be a long road back to the blond.

I know you all are going to demand a picture so here it is. You don't have to comment and tell me it's not that bad but you can if you want to. I promise the photo doesn't do it justice--It is even more red and dark in real life.

I had a similar experience right before my wedding. And also on my mission (dont dye your hair yourself when you dont understand the language in which instructions are written). I have been a a two decade long quest (that is not an exaggeration) to turn my mousy brown into a lovely auburn. I am sorry that you don't like your results. It is really hard to adjust to looking so unfamiliar to onesself. The truth is, though, you are really cute so what is temporarily disappointing now is really very very temporary. I love that your husband likes having a strange woman in his bed. Hilarious.
ps i am jealous of your natural color. it is too bad that you had to discover what i have battled for so long: your color doesnt come in a bottle.

I don't know why we always think we'll like our hair dark. Everytime I do it I get depressed. Dark hair doesn't work with pasty skin, unless it's porcelain like Lu's. I think it actually looks good in the picture ("Then I guess I AM tellin you what you want to hear . . .") but this too shall pass. You'll be blonde again in time for summer.

Brooke, I love it. Honestly. I'm blonde now, and you're dark! I think you should keep it for a while :)

I seriously LOVE it!!! I understand not liking a big change. (I dyed my hair back to the original dark brown from blond right before my wedding and I went back immediately after crying for hours.) I wouldn't lie to you... I really like it. You'll probably just switch back, but maybe you'll get used to it. There are too many blonds out there in Utah anyway!!!

Honestly, I think it looks really good. Promise. It's a fun change. I like it blonde, too. If you feel much cuter blonde, head down the road in 6 weeks.
Laughing at Sam liking having a strange woman in bed.

I LIKE it. I think it looks really good. Don't hate me, but it's true. You rock the dark hair, sista.

everytime I go dark I hate it!!! It take so long for me to get used to it, I feel washed out and just plain ugly! So I know how you feel, but honeslty you look good, It is not bad, and you can always throw a few blonde in there to brighten it up!

It's not awful.

Brooke, Brooke, Brooke after 3 kids you should know NEVER NEVER do anything to yourself when you are prego, it just never goes right. That said it looks nice, really it is not bad. I understand how you feel, you do have the most beautiful natural hair color.

You know I like it, and I've seen it in real life. Go with it! It's fun to do different things.

I was waiting for this after your post on my blog-I hesitated to post our family pic on Christmas cuz it's one of the first pics I have so dark and it totally looks like I have NO make-up on! Gotta love these fair skin genes!

My vote- experiment with the darker side for a while before you throw in the towel and go back to blonde. Smokey eyes, eye-liner, brow coloring and all. I think your friend Alexandra is right- hairdressers can never get color right for natural red hair. Maybe this will be your chance to let your REAL natural color come through and when it's closer to natural you'll like it more.
I think it looks great and I'm not just saying that.

i commend you for bravery! i've been trying to get the guts up to do something to my hair, anything for at least 5 years now...i've done nothing!
i've always been jealous of your RED brookie!

I liked it the day you came home from the hairdresser, and I like it even more 4 days later. I think you are too hard on yourself!! Just go with it for awhile!

Phew! I thought you were going to say you cut it all off saying long hair is for the younger set - that was close!

What's wrong with dark, sassy, auburn hair? It's my preferred shade. There is something mysterious and intelligent about it - or at least that's what I tell myself.

I actually love the dark red! I have always wanted Elle McPherson's fabulous dark red hair and now you have it! You have to keep it for the 6 weeks for a fair opinion!

I LOVE IT. You do look different, but I think it's really pretty! Maybe you don't like it because it looks so foreign to you?

You Warner girls are lovely no matter the hair color!

Also, I have completely pasty skin and it's so hard to find good colors to wear. :) But that was nice of Ash to say that I pull it off!

okay now I'm convinced that we are twins separated by a few countries and oceans... My last blonde job was gross so I am wanting to go back to my light brown but I have done that and all I end up doing is going blonde again. I should do a post and show my dark brown Vs blond and get the punters to vote for their fave... okay where was I this is your blog.... your hair looks FANTASTIC and I hope you stay that colour...
PS thanks for your great comments.

Okay--I would never lie--I love it!

However--the same thing happens with my skin color. I once dyed my hair brown (gee thanks, Clairol!) and it came out with gun-metal grey undertones. Not hot, and my pale skin was a hot mess. Never again.

I agree with everyone else--you have it, it's cute, roll with it baby. You can always go back!

I don't think it looks bad at all, but I know how hard it is to go dark after being light for a long time.

This line totally cracked me up: "I can't wear pink or pastels and it's kind of ruining my life."

Brooke, I like it! I'm anxious to see it in person. Though I do agree, I think being pregnant in the winter is a bad time for a drastic change. I've never dyed my hair, but I've gone wrong with drastic haircuts at a not-so-ideal time. Give it time, I bet you'll like it. Plus, I love red hair!

sarahw said...

It seriously looks good!! Of all people, you can pull it off. I think you have the perfect skin tone. But I think anything that changes while you are pregnant is hard to deal with. Believe me, this pregnancy is the hardest one. I HATE, HATE my body changing. I think I'm stopping at 3 kids, just to get my body back.

Brooke, I so feel your pain. Still hating my short hair, I called about extensions just yesterday. $700 dollars. Choke. I'm totally stuck with my short hair.

I've always wanted to go blond. One time, I actually asked my hairdresser girl to make me a red head- I love red hair, too! She wouldn't do it. I gave up on the dream.

As for you, it doesn't look bad. Embrace it for the next six weeks! You can do it!

Linde said...

I like the color--I think you look good either way, but I understand when you don't like what happened to your hair. Best part is, it does grow out. :)

Thing I don't understand with genetics is why our hair seems to go dark naturally...which I think makes me look old. I highlight mine a little bit, to lighten the brown. Best part is, it does grow out. :)

melissa walker said...

I would love to go that color but I have 2 things against me--1-a husband with red hair who would divorce me if I went red 2--pale lashes/brows etc that would also have to be dyed. I think you look great--before you go all blonde again--try something more in the middle like a deep strawberry blonde.

I'll add my voice to the chorus of those singing praises to your dark hair.

I love it too!

I think you rock the dark hair and shouldn't be so hard on yourself. 6 weeks will fly by, they really will. You are lucky to be so versatile--blond, brown, or your natural red. Not many women can do that. And as a Latina who doesn't have many options for her hair color, you should trust me on this! You look great!

Laura said...

I like it acutally, but i'm sure it will fade, just give it a little while.

Amy said...

I like it dark, but I'm use to it being like. Maybe at the end of the 6 weeks you'll change your mind. Hair change is always hard!

HAPPYHANERHOME said...

I love it and it's way better than my greenish gray brown, which has since faded to a dark ash blonde. I tend to go darker when I'm pregnant so I don't have to dye as often, but I always do it myself, which when you're fat with child, like you said, can only cause pain and misgivings. We are still pretty. :) And our hubbies are THE SAME! Nice to have a new gal in bed is the overarching impression I get.

Brooke,
Red head to red head, I think you look fab! But no one can get the red hair right. I try to color mine to just get rid of greys. Your hair looks great! Who did you go to?
