Our Trip to Washington D.C.

First, thanks to everyone for all the wonderful birthday wishes. I spent a great birthday weekend with Sam in Washington, D.C. Sam was there for business and I was there for pleasure. My only requirement for a vacation was met--no kids. I could go to Beaver, Utah and it would still be a vacation if I didn't have my kids with me. Anyway, I digress.

One thing you should know about Sam is that he hates to ask people to take our picture. So he tries to hold the camera out as far as possible for a self-portrait, hence the Washington monument coming out of his head.

One thing you should know about me is that I am an eater. I love to eat and I hate to waste even one meal on a vacation. I am very nervous about ordering badly, which I have a knack for. Luckily, I have a husband who takes pity on me and will always switch me plates so I'm not sad. The best food we had was at a Mexican restaurant in Ballston, Virginia called The Rio Grande Cafe.

While in Washington, we visited the American History Smithsonian (my favorite) and Sam was able to get this photo with his idol, Stephen Colbert.

We also went visited the Mall (not a shopping destination, to my dismay) and the white house.

We went to Arlington National Cemetary. The cherry blossom were just beginning to bloom and it was gorgeous.

We also took in a matinee ("Taken") and I did some shopping while Sam attended meetings. Among other things, I picked up this little beauty at Macys. (Mine is white!)

The highlight of the trip was seeing a older, well-dressed lady wearing open toed boots on the metro. I kid you not people. It was one of those moments where I thought "She looks nice" and my eyes traveled down until I got to her boots. They were very 80s. Then I saw the peep toes. I couldn't believe it. Is this out there being done? Say it isn't so.

Brooke,

It looks like such a great trip! I'm glad you two were able to get away, kid free! I love D.C.!

Peep toe boots? I have now lost my innocence. NAST. We are also always doing the self-photo. It's a great vehicle for getting some kind passerby to offer to snap a picture. Cute purses--both the new one and your green one! Your trip looks so fun. I love that restaurant in VA. I am still upset about two dinners where I mis-ordered in Hawaii. Tragedies both times, made worse by Tyler making fantastic choices.

A weekend just isn't long enough! I'm glad you had fun! Amazing things are to be seen in DC We went there on our honeymoon. That is where I saw my first homeless lady. She was sleeping in the bathroom of the washington monument. Rolled up her bed and put it under the sink during the day. I think it rocked my world. I was so protected.

P.S. I like the picture of Sam with Colbert. His expression reminds me of Luke.

And I'm jealous that you were able to load and use your pictures. I am going crazy.

Did 'Taken' terrify you as much as it did me? I'll tell you one thing, my poor kids are NEVER going anywhere alone. EVER.

How fun. I love a good "tag a long" trip. Like you said, anywhere without the kids is a vaca!

I am completely jealous of you. A trip without kids, WOW!! I think you were in DC the perfect time of the year-not too hot or cold.
Great purse, it is really cute.

The highlight of the trip was when we checked into the hotel and Brooke found some "complimentary" brownies by the elevator. We were rather famished and noticed that there was no sign indicating a per person limit. So we grabbed a few and ran to our room like Bonnie and Clyde.

D.C. was a blast. Good weather and great food. Uncle Julio's Rio Grande is the best mexican food I have ever had. (www.unclejulios.com)

Love DC. So glad you had a great time!

Boots are for when you have crap feet and haven't gotten a pedicure....like all winter long. This defeats the purpose of boots--plus they're ugly!

You chose the perfect time to go to DC. I haven't been in years, but I loved it.

You both look amazing.

I've never heard of open-toed boots, so don't blame it on my generation!

you had me at no kids. good for you guys! dc is such a blast. i really could do some damage there. i think my fav is the portrait of colbert. nice job on the bag. tell me how the white works out - i admit, i am nervous about white bags.i've had my eye on this one at pbk (http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/da130/index.cfm?pkey=cdiaper%2Dbags%2Dbaby%2Dgear&cm%5Fsrc=hero), but am having an inner conflict over whether it will remain looking so clean. you two are pretty adorable.

I love DC. It makes me feel so patriotic. Careful about any vacation to a place named Beaver, even though I do agree on the no kids thing.
