Out with the Old

Drum roll please...We are updating our kitchen! I have been so excited to talk about this on my blog but I wanted to be sure it was really going to happen. Back in December, when I mentioned to Sam that our carpets really needed to be cleaned, he casually said, "Maybe we should just put in hard wood floors." From there it kind of snowballed into something much bigger.

I have blogged about wanting to change my kitchen here and here. So this is a dream come true for me. I have a way of smothering a project like this and it has consumed my last couple of months. I am so nervous with what I have picked and I hope it will all come together.

This is what my kitchen used to look like:

Good-bye oak cabinets, white tile, white appliances, blue and yellow accessories!

Good-bye oak as far as the eye can see:

Good-bye oak mantel and white tile surround!

Good-bye living room carpet:

Here is what Sam was doing on Saturday:

So I guess there is no turning back now.

Here are my kids watching him rip out the tile. I made them wear shades to protect their eyes in case of flying shrapnel.

Here is my family room presently with all of this extra furniture and wood in it:

Stay tuned for more pictures and updates. Sam is ripping out the tile and carpet and laying the hard wood floors himself. Heaven help us. The rest is being contracted out. So far, I have everything picked out except my granite for my counter tops. I am still stressing over that but hopefully it will be resolved soon!

The kids in their shades are the cutest. Impressive to see Sam wrecking up that tile. You'll have to do lots of updates along this journey.

What a project! Poor Sam! I guess he could pay someone if he wanted to. We did the same thing a few years ago. We replaced all the wood in our house, including our front door. We weren't brave enough to rip out tile and I think we'll move before that ever happens. I have a hallway that runs throughout our house and it is all tile, it leads into our kitchen/dining. There is no way! Good luck and I can't wait to see the finished product.

And you're prego!! Woman, you r ca-razy!

I once laid wood floors. If I can do it (note I bore easily and have zilch attention to detail) Sam can do it.

Go, Sam, go!!

So excited to see the work of art as it progresses!

YAY! I love stuff like this. Please post frequent updates.
I'm dying to put dark hardwood in our kitchen entryway.

That is more than a kitchen overhall. Wow. I can't wait to see how it turns out. And, how manly that Sam is doing some of the work himself. My husband says that you can't expect a lawyer to be able to do that sort of thing. I'm bookmarking this page.

Those pictures look all too familiar...I literally about went nuts with the mess and the dust and the confusion and chaos EVERYWHERE at my house last year, but as you know I LOVE my new updates, they were well worth it! Hang in there and I can't wait to see it all! I am coming over for a personal tour though-pictures won't be enough for me!

I am so jealous--I need to rip out my oak/ceramic tile/countertops too. Can Sam come out here and just rip my tile out and then I'll say to Paul, "Oh well, no turning back now!"

So jealous! I'm dying to scrap my crappy cabinets! I'm sure it will be gorgeous.

Are you keeping your oak furniture? (The armoire, coffee table-top, etc.) I'm sure you could paint them if you wanted,

how fun for you!! Keep posting from the construction zone. Good luck finding countertops you like. I know a GREAT place, but it's around the corner from the Mostess and your sister and a far drive from SLC.

so excited for you brookie! i know you'v been wanting this. and im sure it will look fantastic, can't wait! the best part is that Sam can do some of it. that would NEVER happen in my household...too much swearing and fighting that a divorce may be the outcome!

Wow!

You are so ambitious! It's going to look fabulous. You have great taste, I can tell. I love love hard wood floors. How lucky you have a man (your husband) who's willing to do it for free. Did you use the Pregnancy Card to get him to do it for you?

I am so impressed. Good luck!

Way to go Brooke (and handy man Sam)... this is way more than a kitchen reno.
I wish you lived here or I live there so Dave could do your granite (and I could advise you to get the colour I wanted so I could see what it looked like in your kitchen first)for a really good price.

Love it, Love it!! Please keep posting pictures, you know I love a project!! I can't wait to see it.

Is sam a good provider?

What are you doing with the old cabinets. I would be glad to take them off your hands or buy them for my craft room!!!

brooke said...

Adrienne,

We are just having them painted so they are staying. I'm excited you guys are buying a new house!

I want to be invited to the grand tour when it's all done. How about a blogging lunch? I'll bring the take out :) BTW, is that Sam asking if Sam's a good provider? I love anonymous comments. So mysterious.

brooke said...

Jen--That sounds like a plan. I can't wait. Sam is a good provider but he isn't the anonymous commenter. I know who is though.

Congrats on getting the new kitchen! Love it and am also jealous. Had to settle for new paint and new knobs in ours. Someday, though...

Also, glad you had so much fun with Ashley. I went to Florida with some girlfriends for a few days last week and it was awesome. Gotta love 'me' time.

As another hilarious book recommendation, check out "A Girl Named Zippy." Lauged my a** off through the whole thing.

One more thing -- it's definitely Pottery Barn, not you.

While procrastinating my homework, I looked at the other times you blogged about wanting to change the kitchen. I was wondering if you are going to go with the black or green island? Maybe I'll just have to wait and see until it's done. Looks like fun!

brooke said...

Katie--black. What do you think?

katie said...

Even though I love green right now, I was thinking that black would be the best option. It's more versatile. Can wait to see it finished!

How fun to get all of that done! So excited for you! Can't believe you are doing it while pregnant! I know Sam is the one doing it, but you are living in it. :)

Your old kitchen looks EXACTLY like mine! Hilarious! We are getting our floors done this Spring, but the rest will have to wait 'til we win the lottery! Ha!
